Mercedes-Benz 300 SLRThe Uhlenhaut coupé - 1955. The world's first gullwing door car – fascination 300 SLR
The 1950s' most spectacular car: modern, elegant and very fast. The 300 SL Mercedes surpassed everything available until then and, with its 300 km/h, left BMW and Porsche in the shade.
No wonder! Under the gullwing's fantastic body is a formula 1 engine expanded to 3 litres. Because the Coupé was actually built for racing; it was intended to be used preferentially in long-distance races, such as the Mille Miglia in the 1956 24-hour Le Mans race. But as Daimler-Benz withdrew from motor sport unexpectedly at the end of 1955, it all happened differently.
Why the name Uhlenhaut coupé? Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the brilliant designer and director of the Mercedes motor sport division in Stuttgart.
